"Running Strong is a nonprofit begun in 1986 by Olympic gold medalist Billy Mills (Oglala Lakota) and Gene Krizek, designed to help Native communities meet immediate survival needs—food, water, and shelter—while expanding programs that lead to broader opportunity and empowerment . A key focus today is maternal and newborn support through the Wak’ányeja: New Mother Care for the New Sacred Child program. Launched in 2024, it recognizes that motherhood is sacred in Native cultures and that many mothers and babies on remote reservations lack access to essential care. The program distributes Maternal Care Kits—packed with items like postpartum pads, nipple cream, nursing pads, thermometers, nasal aspirators, baby shampoo, lotion, vitamin D, prenatal vitamins, blankets, burp cloths, and more—to support both mom and baby during pregnancy, birth, and the critical early weeks of life. In fall 2024 alone, they distributed over 3,000 kits—one for each newborn-mother pair. While we’re highlighting their wonderful newborn and mother-focused program, it’s worth noting that Running Strong’s impact extends far beyond. They provide clean water systems, food, safe housing, hygiene and dental kits, school supplies, winter clothing, youth leadership grants, gardening programs, mental and physical health initiatives—and preserve tribal languages and culture across multiple reservations.
